With Cream

Welcome to Fanfiction Friday, your passport into the world of fanfiction! This week, we’re learning about the Wild West of fanfic: Canon Divergence.

As a reminder, if you’re just joining us now, you’ll probably want to pop over to the introductory vocabulary post first, unless you’re already a fanfic veteran.

Last time, we learned about the best AU to go to if happily ever afters aren’t your thing (again, I don’t understand, but still not judging), or you just don’t think anything in the canon universe needs changing.

Maybe you’ve caught up on everything in canon and you want more, more, more! Maybe you didn’t like what they did to your fave, but Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies is a bit too sugary for you.

Whatever the case may be, Alternate Universe – Canon Divergence may be just the AU you’ve been looking for.

The thing you have to know going into this AU, is that it is very, very broad. Unlike some other AUs that follow general rules and conventions—kind of like genre fiction—the only criterion for a Canon Divergence AU is just that it diverges in some way from canon. That leaves room for a whole smorgasbord of plot elements, tropes, genres, and more, some of which you may be interested in reading, and others, not so much.

Still, don’t let that turn you off of this AU, it’s a good way to start branching out if you’re new to fic but ready to move beyond the Canon Compliant realm, and it’s also a good way to find new fics that you might not have otherwise considered reading if you’ve been sticking to more genre-oriented AUs (which we will start getting into soon, and have already gotten a taste of with Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies).

If Canon Divergence sounds intriguing, it’s time to head over to AO3. Be sure to select the fandom(s) you want in the include filter, add anything you don’t want to see to the exclude filters, and away you go!

That concludes this week’s edition of Fanfiction Friday. Happy reading!
