Fun with Hieroglyphics

In this post:

  • Basic Egyptian hieroglyphs (information worksheet)
  • Deciphering an Egyptian cartouche (activity worksheet)
  • “Write your name in hieroglyphs” name card (printable cut-and-color)

A while back I was reading a fanfic (as one does, when one is me). Said fanfic had absolutely nothing to do with Egyptian hieroglyphics beyond the very tenuous connection of there being writing on a wall, but for whatever reason, it reminded me of a class activity from high school. I did a google search to try and find something similar—but to my annoyance, I couldn’t find anything that was exactly what I had in mind. This inspired me to make my own, which I am sharing here in hopes that they may be useful to others—enjoy!

The Activities

Basic Egyptian hieroglyphs

Deciphering Egyptian cartouches

Detailed answer key:

Left: i mn n t w t ankh (= Tutankhamen)

Middle: “Come” nfr t i (female speaker) (=“The beautiful one has come”=Nefertiti)

Right: s nfr w (=Sneferu/Snofru)

Name card printable

Here is an example of the finished product.

It’s a bit floppy because I did not glue mine (I wanted to be able to store it flat) and printed it on regular cheap printer paper. I think it looks pretty good nonetheless! The hieroglyphs read “short and sweet.”
