Welcome to Fanfiction Friday, your passport into the world of fanfiction! This week, we’re moving away from canon-related AUs and on to a time-honored favorite: Coffeeshop AU. Everyone has read at least one Coffeeshop AU, and if you haven’t, what better time to start?
As a reminder, if you’re just joining us now, you’ll probably want to pop over to the introductory vocabulary post first, unless you’re already a fanfic veteran.
Last time, we learned about the wild and crazy place that is the Canon Divergence AU, thereby wrapping up our brief tour through the canon-related AUs. Onwards through the fanfic multiverse!
Once you’ve cleared all the canon-related AUs (Canon Compliant, Canon Divergence, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies), the next AU you’re most likely to hit is the Coffeeshop AU. There’s really no avoiding it. It’s so pervasive that it’s both a time-honored favorite and a bit of a trope in the fanfic community.
Some people love it, some people hate it, sometimes you just have to be in the mood for it. If you enjoyed the theme/style of the “Your Barista Today Is” posts on this blog, you’ll probably enjoy coffeeshop AU at least a little.
If you think you might want to give Coffeeshop AU a try, it’s time to head over to AO3. Be sure to select the fandom(s) you want in the include filter, add anything you don’t want to see to the exclude filters, and away you go!
